<p><i><b>Australopithecus deyiremeda</b></i> ist eine <a href="Art_(Biologie)" title="Art (Biologie)">Art</a> der ausgestorbenen <a href="Gattung_(Biologie)" title="Gattung (Biologie)">Gattung</a> <i><a href="Australopithecus" title="Australopithecus">Australopithecus</a></i> aus der <a href="Familie_(Biologie)" title="Familie (Biologie)">Familie</a> der <a href="Menschenaffen" title="Menschenaffen">Menschenaffen</a>. <a href="Fossil" title="Fossil">Fossilien</a>, die <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> zugeordnet wurden, stammen aus rund 3,59 bis 3,30 Millionen Jahre alten <a href="Stratum_(Arch%C3%A4ologie)" title="Stratum (Archäologie)">Fundschichten</a> des <a href="Pal%C3%A4ontologie" title="Paläontologie">paläontologischen</a> <a href="Ausgrabung" title="Ausgrabung">Grabungsgebietes</a> <a href="Woranso-Mille" title="Woranso-Mille">Woranso-Mille</a> im westlichen Zentrum der <a href="Afar_(Region)" title="Afar (Region)">Afar-Region</a> in <a href="%C3%84thiopien" title="Äthiopien">Äthiopien</a>. Das <a href="Epitheton#Biologie" title="Epitheton">Epitheton</a> <i>deyiremeda</i> ist zusammengesetzt aus den Wörtern <i>deyi</i> („nah“) und <i>remeda</i> („Verwandter“) der <a href="Afar_(Sprache)" title="Afar (Sprache)">Afar-Sprache</a> und bedeutet „naher Verwandter“. <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> bedeutend folglich sinngemäß „nah verwandter, südlicher Affe“.
</p>
<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Erstbeschreibung">Erstbeschreibung</h2></div>
<p>Als <a href="Typus_(Nomenklatur)#Typen_der_Artgruppe" title="Typus (Nomenklatur)">Holotypus</a> wurde in der <a href="Erstbeschreibung" title="Erstbeschreibung">Erstbeschreibung</a> von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> das Fragment der linken Hälfte eines <a href="Oberkiefer" title="Oberkiefer">Oberkiefers</a> – Sammlungsnummer: BRT-VP-3/1 – mit sechs erhaltenen Zähnen benannt (2. <a href="Schneidezahn" title="Schneidezahn">Schneidezahn</a> bis 2. <a href="Molar_(Zahn)" title="Molar (Zahn)">Molar</a>), das am 4. März 2011 von M. Barao entdeckt worden war. Zusätzlich wurde als <a href="Paratypus" class="mw-redirect" title="Paratypus">Paratypus</a> ein gut erhaltener, in zwei Teile zerbrochener <a href="Unterkiefer" title="Unterkiefer">Unterkiefer</a> (BRT-VP-3/14) ausgewählt. Diese Funde unterscheiden sich den Analysen ihres Entdeckers, <a href="Yohannes_Haile-Selassie" title="Yohannes Haile-Selassie">Yohannes Haile-Selassie</a>, zufolge durch die ausgeprägte Dicke des <a href="Zahnschmelz" title="Zahnschmelz">Zahnschmelzes</a> und die besonders ausgeprägte Massivität der Kieferknochen von den zu <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i> gestellten Funden.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Bei den der Erstbeschreibung zugrunde liegenden Fossilien handelt es sich um Oberflächenfunde, die aus dem Sandsteinboden herausgewittert waren.
</p><p>Die Abkürzung BRT steht für <i>Burtele</i>, die Fundstelle des Holotypus' hat die Koordinaten 11° 27' 43.9" Nord, 40° 31' 41.0" Ost. Verwahrort der Funde ist das <a href="Nationalmuseum_von_%C3%84thiopien" title="Nationalmuseum von Äthiopien">Nationalmuseum von Äthiopien</a> in <a href="Addis_Abeba" title="Addis Abeba">Addis Abeba</a>.
</p>
<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Stammesgeschichtliche_Einordnung">Stammesgeschichtliche Einordnung</h2></div>
<p>Die <a href="Stammesgeschichte_des_Menschen" title="Stammesgeschichte des Menschen">stammesgeschichtliche Einordnung</a> von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> und die in der Erstbeschreibung der Funde aus den Merkmalen der Knochen abgeleitete Berechtigung, sie einer neuen Art zuzuschreiben, wurde bereits in einem Begleitartikel zur Erstbeschreibung als voreilig kritisiert:<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Das Fossil BRT-VP-3/1 zeige eine große Ähnlichkeit mit dem Fossil KNM-WT 40000, dem Holotypus von <i>Kenyanthropus platyops</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> <a href="Tim_White" title="Tim White">Tim White</a> kommentierte 2015 die Interpretation der Funde als neue Art ebenfalls zurückhaltend: Es könne sein, dass die Funde nur Belege für eine größere anatomische Variabilität von <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i> seien als bisher vermutet.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> 2003 argumentierte Tim White weitergehend, die Schädelfragmente von KNM-WT 40000 seien viel zu stark verformt gewesen, als dass ihre Rekonstruktion zur Grundlage der Gattung <i>Kenyanthropus</i> hätte gemacht werden dürfen; es handele sich möglicherweise um eine Variante von <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> 2023 schrieb schließlich <a href="Zeresenay_Alemseged" title="Zeresenay Alemseged">Zeresenay Alemseged</a> in einem <a href="Review_(Wissenschaft)" title="Review (Wissenschaft)">Review-Artikel</a>, dass die anatomischen Merkmale von <i>Australopithecus</i> sehr variabel gewesen seien, weswegen es naheliege, „das Material von <i>A. deyiremeda</i> als eine Population von <i>A. afarensis</i> zu interpretieren, die den Variationsbereich dieses Taxons geringfügig erweitert.“<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Alemseged räumte jedoch zugleich ein, falls der Nachweis gelinge, dass der <a href="Burtele-Fu%C3%9F" title="Burtele-Fuß">Burtele-Fuß</a> und die <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> zugeordneten Funde zur gleichen Art gehören, dann würde diese einzigartige Kombination von Kiefer- und Schädelknochen (wie bei <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i>) und Fuß-Knochen (wie bei <i><a href="Ardipithecus_ramidus" title="Ardipithecus ramidus">Ardipithecus ramidus</a></i>) die Anerkennung von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> in Fachkreisen als eigenständige Art „stärken“. Ende 2024 wurden von anderen Forschern hingegen erneut – anhand der Schädel- und Kiefermerkmale – Argumente für die Anerkennung von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> als eigenständige Art vorgetragen.<sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Im November 2025 wurden schließlich von der Arbeitsgruppe um Yohannes Haile-Selassie neu entdeckte Fossilien – aus der gleichen Bodenschicht wie zuvor der Holotypus – beschrieben, insbesondere der beidseits gut erhaltene, jugendliche Unterkiefer BRT-VP-2/135 und mehrere einzeln aufgesammelte Zähne, sodass nunmehr insgesamt 25 hominine Burtele-Fossilien bekannt sind, darunter drei Kiefer-Fragmente.<sup id="cite_ref-9" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Die Merkmale der Zähne und der Bau der Kieferknochen deuten laut der im Fachblatt <i>Nature</i> publizierten Studie darauf hin, dass diese Fossilien zur gleichen Art gehören. Wegen der „begrenzten räumlichen und zeitlichen Verbreitung“ der Burtele-Funde und „mangels Beweisen dafür, dass diese mehr als eine Art repräsentieren könnten“, wurde auch der Burtele-Fuß zu <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> gestellt. In einem Begleitartikel wurde in <i>Nature</i> jedoch betont, „dass die Zuordnung von Knochen der Gliedmaßen oder des Rumpfes zu einer Art eine Frage der Wahrscheinlichkeit ist, es sei denn, sie sind Teil eines einzelnen Skeletts, das artspezifische Merkmale aufweist, die in der Regel auf den Schädel beschränkt sind“;<sup id="cite_ref-spoor2025_10-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-spoor2025-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> ähnlich äußerte sich Zeray Alemseged gegenüber der Fachzeitschrift <i>Science</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Gestützt wurde die Zugehörigkeit der Fossilien zu einer einzigen Art durch <a href="Isotopenuntersuchung" title="Isotopenuntersuchung">Isotopenuntersuchungen</a> des <a href="Zahnschmelz" title="Zahnschmelz">Zahnschmelzes</a> von acht zufällig ausgewählten Zähnen. Demnach ernährte sich <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> überwiegend von <a href="C3-Pflanze" title="C3-Pflanze">C<sub>3</sub>-Pflanzen</a> (zum Beispiel von Blättern und Früchten), während ein Vergleich mit dem in der gleichen Epoche und in der gleichen Region lebenden <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i> ergab, dass dieser insbesondere <a href="C4-Pflanze" title="C4-Pflanze">C<sub>4</sub>-Pflanzen</a> (zum Beispiel Gräser) als Nahrung bevorzugte.
</p><p>
Yohannes Haile-Selassie et al. (2025) argumentierten ferner, dass die <a href="Morphologie_(Biologie)" title="Morphologie (Biologie)">morphologischen</a> Merkmale der Fossilien von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> in stärkerem Maße den ebenfalls <a href="Plesiomorphie" title="Plesiomorphie">ursprünglichen Merkmalen</a> von <i><a href="Australopithecus_anamensis" title="Australopithecus anamensis">Australopithecus anamensis</a></i> nahestehen als den Merkmalen von <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i>. Dies wiederum könne darauf hinweisen, dass <i>Australopithecus anamensis</i> der gemeinsame Vorfahre von <i>Australopithecus deyiremeda</i> und <i><a href="Australopithecus_africanus" title="Australopithecus africanus">Australopithecus africanus</a></i> war, die beide enger miteinander verwandt zu sein scheinen als beide mit <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i>.<sup id="cite_ref-spoor2025_10-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-spoor2025-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Sollte das durch weitere Fossilien untermauert werden, würde <i>Australopithecus afarensis</i> auch als direkter Vorfahre des Menschen ausfallen. </p>
